Making the Unfortunate Transition to Dentures

If you have lost a substantial number of teeth, perhaps through decay or age, dentures can be the best option. There are a number of treatments to choose from, each with their own benefits.

Conventional denture treatment

Conventional dentures are made by a dentist in Tampa taking a mold of your mouth and teeth. The color and shape of your teeth are also taken into consideration. However, they’re not placed into the mouth until 8 to 12 weeks after the teeth have been removed. This allows the gums to have healed properly. The main drawback of this form of denture is that you’ll have to go for a significant period of time without teeth.

Immediate denture treatment

Immediate dentures are put in as soon as the teeth extraction has taken place. As with real dentures, an immediate denture set is created specifically for your mouth and bite by a Tampa dental surgeon. The main drawback is that in order for the dentures to fit properly a few visits to the dentist may be needed. This is because while your gums are healing they’ll shrink in size. It can take weeks, if not months, for you to get used to your immediate dentures.

Overdenture treatment

Dental attachments are used for an overdenture. These attachments are either placed in the roots of the teeth or, if this isn’t possible, into dental implants. Two examples are telescopic dentures and bar joint dentures.

  • Bar joint dentures: These are used in cases where all or a significant amount of the lower teeth have been lost. This means that it’s not possible for a denture to be held in place when you chew. With an overdenture it’s possible to secure a denture to the jawbone. To make sure that the dentures fit properly, theadjacent teeth may be modified using locking devices. The bar joints are used because they work better than separate implants. However, implants are usually used as well to stabilize the bars.
  • Telescopic dentures: These are used in cases where bone density has decreased by a large amount. They’re composed of a double crown system consisting of inner metal crowns and outer crowns which are placed over any remaining teeth. This denture is removable and fits well. However, root canal work is needed for any natural teeth, which then require metal posts for stability.

Benefits of dentures

There are numerous benefits to having dentures fitted:

  • If you suffer from bad tooth decay they can allow you to have a new set of teeth.
  • They require little maintenance once the initial work has been successfully carried out as they be brushed just like natural teeth. The only difference is that you take them out periodically to allow your gums to rest.
  • Dentures allow you to eat whatever you want.
  • With age your teeth can become more sensitive. However, with dentures the teeth are no longer connected to any nerves and sensitivity is no longer an issue.
  • Dentures are made to measure so they’re as comfortable as possible and can be easily adjusted.
  • Losing teeth can cause your face to sag and become wrinkled. Dentures can help provide support for your facial structure, resulting in a more youthful appearance.
