When somebody says make-up, most women probably think about lip gloss, blusher and eye shadow. Something which is often forgotten but makes a big difference, is highlighting. This technique helps draw attention to your best features and makes skin look radiant.
The most common place to highlight, which many women do on a daily basis, is under the eyebrows. “A make-up way of having Botox”, joked make-up artist Anya Lastric.
Highlighting the brow bone lifts the eyebrows a bit, making you look more alert and your eyes brighter. Putting a bit of highlighter on the inner corner of your eye is also very effective.
“It really brings out the eyes in a subtle kind of way. People will be drawn to your eyes, but the reason for it won’t be apparent,” Anya explained. “And while it does look great with eye shadow, you can also use it when you don’t have any other eye make-up on, just to get that bright, fresh look”.
But don’t limit highlighting to your eyes. It works just as well when added to the bridge of your nose, your chin, the collar bones and the apple of your cheeks. Or try Anya’s favourite: “I love highlighting the Cupid’s bow! It just gives a great effect and makes any lips look fuller and sexier, especially when paired with a touch of lip gloss. It really accentuates the lips.”
As more and more women have become aware of the highlighting technique, increasing amounts of make-up companies are releasing such products. One of the most popular is Benefit’s High Beam, a pink liquid highlighter suitable for all skin colours. If you don’t want anything fancy, a white shimmer eye shadow is just as good. Just make sure that it is a shimmer and not glittery and that the white colour has a peachy or gold tone. MAC’s eye shadow in a shade called rice paper is a very popular alternative, as well as Make Up Store’s colour Meteor.
