What Skin Care Products To Pack While Traveling
Oh its been a while since Ive written an article. Ive been enjoying connecting with you through video so much lately but as I begin my travels you will be seeing more of me in writing than in video.
What an adventure Ive had already! I was all prepared to fly out to South America on Monday but my flight ended up being overbooked by 55 people so I was held up in Sydney for a couple of days in a hotel. Now Im back home in Brisbane until Sunday when Ill detour to South America via the United States. So if youre in New York next week, look out for me!
What my little Sydney detour taught me was what to take out of my backpack and what to add in. I guess I was lucky that me and my backpack had a trial run. I mean, sure Ive traveled with it plenty of times before but this is a new adventure so I have a new set of packed things. This time around I swore Id take less bath and beauty products, but somehow Ive managed to fill my cosmetics bag right up. After giant bottles of shampoo, conditioner and body wash along with coconut oil (for a body moisturizer) and my beloved jojoba oil, I really dont have a lot of room for much else. Ive also thrown in a few essential oils, lip gloss, mineral makeup and some hair bands and clips. This to me is the bare minimum but still I feel like Im carrying around a giant brick of vanity products.
I stayed at a friends place last night, shes a raw foodie and shes beautiful. It was revealed that she only washes her hair once a month (if that) and she hasnt brushed or combed her hair in years. I was gobsmacked.. especially considering Id walked into her place that day admiring her beautiful dark wavy hair. The good thing for her is that she doesnt need to cart around ridiculous loads of shampoo and conditioner like me. Or even a brush really. Oh so tempting but Im still not brave enough to go no shampoo just yet, even though my friend did point out that its the perfect time in Australia to do it right now winter (beanie weather).
One tip I will pass onto you that Ive already been relieved Ive started to do this trip around (although its terrible for the environment), is to buy some zip lock plastic bags and put your potential leakage products in there. Somehow I have awful luck with products leaking when I fly. The air pressure is almost guaranteed to bust open at least one of my products. This time around it was my body wash which thankfully was sharing a zip lock bag with my jojoba oil so it didnt manage to soil my entire back pack of items. Although my tea tree oil which wasnt in a zip lock did leak (possibly because I didnt put the lid on tight enough, oops), and now my entire backpack smells like it has been disinfected with Tea Tree Oil. How cool am I.
On my little Sydney adventure I also discovered the one item that I was missing an exfoliant, and one luxury item that I wished I had medicinal honey. The hotel room I was put up in had a jacuzzi bath tub which of course I used, twice. What I wished I had was more raw ingredients to make up some home made skin care. Medicinal honey would have been perfect to slather on as a mask while I was soaking in the tub. And I had been a little too lazy with the exfoliation recently so my skin was crying out for a good scrub. I guess my mind was on sharing basic bathrooms in hostels in Peru and not on lazying around in a jacuzzi in posh hotels in Sydney (yes, flight delays can sometimes come to your advantage, thank you to the airline for putting me up in a nice place).
I dont really want to try and squish any more products into my backpack so Im going to just grab something grainy and edible to add into my jojoba oil to use as an exfoliant while Im traveling wherever I am in the world. This may be something like oats, the peel of a papaya, or even the crystalized honey or some local organic honey that Ive picked up at a health store.
One of the best things about traveling is how much it forces you to go back to the absolute bare minimum with your skin care routine (especially if youre backpacking like me!). And the best skin care is the simplest skin care that uses the least amount of products that contain the least amount of ingredients. My skin is always better when I travel, and I attribute this to giving it less focus and obsessive energy, and of course simplifying my skin care routine right down to the absolute bare essentials.
But you dont have to be traveling to cut down on what youre using. Just give it a go for 4-5 weeks at least. Drop down to using as little skin care products as you possible can. If youre a product junkie, youll be saving plenty of cash and I would not be surprised at all if your skin started to get a little better too.
